I am John E. Andrus Professor of Economics and Professor of East Asian Studies. I received my Ph.D. in Economics from the University of California, Davis, and my B.A. from the University of Wisconsin–Eau Claire.

My research focuses on banking and financial systems, and has been published in leading journals such as American Economic Journal: Macroeconomics, Journal of Banking & Finance, Journal of Development Economics, Journal of Financial Intermediation, Journal of Law and Economics, Journal of Money, Credit, and Banking, Journal of Public Economics, and Journal of Urban Economics, among others, as well as in edited volumes and book chapters.

I have been a Research Fellow at the Tokyo Center for Economic Research (TCER) since 2014. Previously, I was a Research Fellow at the Center for Financial Research at the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (2008) and at the Center for International Research on the Japanese Economy (CIRJE) at the University of Tokyo (2018). One of my articles was recognized with the Journal of Financial Intermediation’s award for the most significant paper published in 2012.

At Wesleyan, I teach courses including Introduction to Economic Theory, Macroeconomic Analysis, Money, Banking, and Financial Markets, the Economy of Japan, the Economies of East Asia, and Quantitative Methods in Economics.
